BIOSPHERE, solo show 2011

BIOSPHERE, the first solo exhibition by Méadhbh O’Connor at Monster Truck Gallery, Dublin 2, 2011.

Two large-scale sculptural installations, and three smaller works:

  1. Noxious Species II‘: approx. 1200 individual pieces of laboratory glassware (200 + miscellaneous pieces of laboratory glassware suspended from a 2m² steel grid; 1000 test tubes in floor-based wooden racks), propagated invasive weed (bindweed – sourced from the streets of Dublin). The total installation occupied approx. 4.5 x 2 x 2 metres (H x W x D).
  2. ‘Fungus Supremus’: [calculate cubic feet from 18 x (65 x 45 x 22 h “)] of living, edible mushrooms sourced from a major, agri-industrial mushroom growers. The mushrooms were harvested and eaten throughout the duration of the exhibition.
  3. Bibliophage.’ Materials: old book, living mushroom mycelium. Dimensions: 240 x 210 x 80 mm.
  4. Library.’ Materials: destroyed memory chip containing approx. 50,000 books displayed in a microscope slide. Dimensions: 75 x 25 x 5 mm.
  5. Dawn‘. Photograph – Archival Pigment Print.

Accompanying the show was an essay by Dublin-based curator and writer Seán O Sullivan that explored the environmental issues surrounding biotic homogenisation and invasive species. Read.

Thanks to Colm Meyler, James O’Brien of Monaghan Mushrooms, Dublin Indoor Gardening, Seán O Sullivan, Dave Madigan and the many volunteers at Monster Truck Gallery.
